In 1955 he staged the " Valse - Fantasie " to the music by Ìikhail Glinka for the graduation performance at the Leningrad choreographic school.

The first major choreographic work by the young master, which made his name as a choreographer, is " Stone Flower " by S. Prokofiev premiered at the Mariinsky theatre in 1957. In 1963 he goes to Prague to do the same job for Czechoslovak National Theatre Company and in 1965 he is invited to stage the ballet for the Bolshoi Company.
