Dmitry Chernyakov was born in Moscow in 1970. Graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatre Art as an opera producer. Upon graduation he worked at the Russian Drama Theatre of Lithuania (Vilnius). For the next few years he mounted a number of operas and drama performances in Russia and Baltic States theatres: Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Vilnius, Samara, Kazan, Omsk etc., where scenography and costume designs in all the performances belong to him.

In 2001 he won the Golden Mask national theatre prize for his production of “ The Legend of the Invisible city of Kitezh and Maiden Fevronia " in the Best Staging and Best Production nominations.
