Ìatorin Vladimir Anatolievich (bass)
Peoples Artist of the Russian Federation (1997)

Was born in Moscow on May 2, 1948. In 1974 he graduated from the State Gnesins Music Pedagogical Institute (nowadays the Russian Academy of Music) in the class of Eugenie Ivanov. In 1974-1991 he sang for the Moscow Academic Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre. In 1989 his Boris Godunov was announced the best opera role of the year.

From 1991 till now Vladimir has been teaching at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts, since 1994 he has been a professor and the head of the chair of Solo Singing Department.

In 1991 Vladimir Matorin joined the Bolshoi Opera Company as soloist.

The singer has sung at the best opera houses of the world, toured in Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Chekhia, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Greece, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, China, Japan, Mongolia, South Korea, USA, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, on the island of Cyprus.

In 1993 took part in the production of Tchaikovsky’s opera Cherevichki at the Wexford Opera Festival (Ireland). Later that year he sang the title role in Boris Godunov at the Grand Theatre in Geneva.

In 1994 the singer performed the part of Golova (Mayor) in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera
Mayskaya Noch (May Night) at the Cologne Philharmonic Society and appeared as Boris Godunov at the Lyrical Opera House in Chicago.

In 1995 he sang the part of Golova (Mayor) (May Night) at the Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland (the conductor Vladimir Yurovsky).

In 1996 he appeared as Dosifey in Khovanshchina at the Nantes Opera (France), the title role in Boris Godunov at the National Theatre in Prague and Pimen (Boris Godunov) in the Opera National de Montpellier, (France).

In 1997 he appeared as Boris Godunov in Houston Grand Opera production (USA).

In 1998 he participated in the concert version of the opera Charodeyka (Sorceress) by P. Tchaikovsky at Festival Hall in London (Royal Opera, the conductor Valerie Gergiev), appeared as Mendozo in the opera Betrothal in a Monastery by S. Prokofiev at the Grand Theatre in Geneva and as Burya-Bogatyr (The Storm-Hero) in the concert version of the opera Kashchey Bessmertny (Kashchey the Immortal) by N. Rimsky-Korsakov with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Festival Hall in London (the conductor Alexander Lazarev).

In 1999 he participated in the Royal Opera’s production of The Golden Cockerel as Tsar Dodon at the London theatre Saddlers Wells (the conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky)

In 2001 he sang the part of Mendozo for the Lyon Opera (the conductor Oleg Kahetani).

In 2002 he appeared as Pimen in the Paris National Opera’s version of Boris Godunov on the stage of Opera de Bastilia (musical director and conductor James Konlon, director Francesca Zambello) and as Boris Godunov at the Lyon Opera (the conductor Ivan Fisher, director Philip Himmelmann, the joint project with the National Theatre of Mannheim).

In 2003 Vladimir sang the title role in the opera Boris Godunov at Oakland and Wellington Theatres (New Zealand) and the one of Varlaam in the same opera in the Royal Opera’s version at Covent Garden in London (the producer Andrey Tarkovsky, the conductor Semyon Bychkov, the participants – John Tomlinson, Sergei Larin, Olga Borodina, Sergei Leiferkus, Vladimir Vaneyev).

In 2004 he made a debut as Pimen at the New York Metropolitan Opera Theatre (the conductor Semyon Bychkov), sang Pimen and Varlaam in Boris Godunov at the theatre Liceo in Barcelona (Spain)

His repertoire includes spiritual music as well. He frequently appears in concert programs. In particular, he appeared with solo concerts at Beethoven Hall of the Bolshoi Theatre, at official concerts for the Government in the Kremlin, at the Russian Embassies in Paris, London, Rome, Berlin, on the German Opera stage (Berlin), at the Senate of France. He sang The Fourteenth Symphony by D. Shostakovich in Montpellier (France), the vocal cycle Songs and Dances of Death by M. Mussorgsky in Antwerp.

In 1991 he joined the Bolshoi Theatre as soloist.

In 1973
he was awarded the II prize of the International Musicians Competition in Geneva.
In 1977
he was awarded the II premium of the All-Union M. I. Glinka Competition of Vocalists.
In 1997
he was given "the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation" rank.
In 2001
he was awarded an order " For merits to the Fatherland ", IV class.
